Level 2, Module 2, Chapter 10

Resolved piece ;

My initial drawings for the three categories, flowers, leaves and seed pods.

Shapes developed from the Chrysanthemum drawing

Shapes developed from the rose drawing

Drawings from Chap 5. Cactus and Seed Pods

Beginning to piece together the three sections from the above

Resolved piece 1 drawing - draft
Initially this was my choice, hence my written notes but I believed there were too many bitzy parts to each section.

This is my final drawing and I simplified the centre section using the rule of 3 along with the leaves which I already knew if needed I cut cut those into two sections for added movement.

Playing around with initial colours, yellows, coppers and golds

The three simplified parts as templates

The three templates doubled in size ready to cut from my sewn pieces of paper and mesh.

Selection of papers, painted and stenciled.

Selection of fabrics, mesh and threads

The two pieces that I used for the whole final resolved piece

The reverse sides - underdeveloped at this stage.

Paper with layers of chiffon and snippets of fabric all sewn in between each new layer using Free motion foot and different threads in cable, running and zig zag stitch with normal foot on.
The first piece is in deliberate circles and spirals as these were used for the central 3 flower heads.
The snakey lines were in gold thread to break through the circles

Copper mesh and layers of chiffon on coloured stenciled paper, sewn through the layers and including snippets of satin, soft copper mesh and threads. I couched on 2 pieces of satin using a wide zig zag stitch and then free motion cable stitch - theses were for the seed pods with tails, I used the mesh in this one as I needed to be able to curl in the seed pod sides.

My written notes:

My finished resolved piece;

Close up photos of sections. My decision to add the central section of cerise chiffon was once everything was wired together it was not quite what I imagined, it was too flat. So, the bulky chiffon was tied between and around the three flower heads to add drama, colour, a softness and contrast.

The leaves section showing wire coiled and covered in places with rafia.
