Backgrounds - experimenting:Page 26
My first background sample, navy felt with a calico backing. Resource used was the line drawing of the dog, page 8, tracing the edge down from the neck. I used stitch and tear to outline the shape then with free motion machining outlined the design. The pale blue is cable stitch in a Perle thread. Orange zig zag stitch fills the outer shape in varying widths. I finished by using a triple running stitch in yellow to bring back the outline.

Yellow felt background. Backing stitch and tear with the design traced on.
Resource picture is the triangular roof in the Folk Art house.
I used cotton variegated threads, with a thicker thread again for the cable stitch in brown. I experimented with the cable stitch using zig zag - makes a very full covering / texture.
Automatic Patterns;
Page 28
Silver grey velvet, calico backing, stitch number 705 (swan) stitched horizontally in a deep purple cotton with 70 needle. I love this effect and texture.
Page 29
I found this lovely little piece of textured cotton in a bag of scraps from my local shop.
Stitch number 115 sewn in lines.

Red silk on calico backing stitched with number 8 over frayed, hand dyed strips of muslin.
Stitch 3 and 9 in 2 rows to experiment.

Red silk on calico with strips of deep blue chiffon sewn down using stitch 8.
Page 32
Cream silk , used a Sulky metallic gold thread and metallic needle - tension reduced to 3, to sew this sample in running stitch and zig zag stitch

Black embroidered lace simply sewn in horizontal lines using stitch 305 (5.5 x 3.5).
Backgrounds - Fabric sheer strips

Lime green felt background, ironed on fusible webbing, removed the backing paper and layered strips of torn red, blue and orange chiffon on top. Iron on with parchment paper, distress with a heat tool.

Chiffon base and top layer attached to fusible webbing - snippets of different colours of chiffon covering the base layer and then the top layer ironed on to make a sandwich.

Printed and Stitched Background
Page 41
Hand dyed satin polyester, printed using acrylic paints on my print block.
The design was taken from the dog drawing on Page 6 and my first background sample Page 26.
It was stitched using Sulky 40 threads and free motion running stitch, shading areas and outlining others.
Page 42
Second sample. Using the same print block plus an additional smaller block for the blue and gold printed on the similar satin polyester background.
This time using free motion zig zag stitch to accentuate the two orange chains and a running stitch creating a direction from first to second to the third chain and running off to finish.
